Tullos sworn in to Miss. House in small ceremony Friday

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Republican Mark Tullos of Raleigh was sworn in to the Mississippi House on Friday in a small ceremony that was not announced to the public.

Tullos says Monday that “there was nothing sinister about it.”

The swearing-in took place in the House chamber on a day the Legislature was not meeting. It happened two days after the House declared Tullos the winner of the District 79 race he contested in Smith and Jasper counties.

Certified results showed Tullos and longtime Democratic Rep. Bo Eaton of Taylorsville tied with 4,589 votes each on Nov. 3. Eaton won a tiebreaker by drawing straws.

Tullos petitioned the House to overturn Eaton’s victory, saying some votes were improperly counted and the race should never have tied.

The Republican-led House voted 67-49 to seat Tullos.
