Traffic stop lands man in court on 2008 car theft charge

JACKSON, Tenn. — A weekend traffic stop for a headlight violation lands a man in court on a motor vehicle theft charge from 2008.

Brandon Owens was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Saturday after police stopped a car for a headlight being out, according to court papers.

Police say Owens was in the front passenger seat with a marijuana cigar on his lap.

There was a warrant issued for Owens from 2008 for motor vehicle theft, according to court papers. He is accused of borrowing a car in December of 2008 and not returning it. The car was recovered in Brownsville the following month.

When officers searched Owens they found about six grams of marijuana in his pants pocket, according to court papers. They also reportedly found a loaded 9 mm handgun under the passenger seat where Owens was sitting.

Owens is charged with motor vehicle theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Owens is being held in lieu of a $15,100 bond.
