Petal fire department updates gun policy to reflect new laws

PETAL, Miss. (AP) – The Petal Fire Department has updated its gun policy to include rules that are in line with new Mississippi laws.

The Hattiesburg American reports that the Petal Board of Alderman voted unanimously to approve the updates at a Wednesday meeting.

Petal Fire Chief Joe Hendry says policy changes include concealed weapon and open carry rules. He says the changes are not drastic and are meant to stay up to date with the laws.

Hendry says he wanted policy to clarify when officials are allowed to carry a weapon. He explained that they are not allowed to carry guns unless they are conducting an investigation.

The department has three officials who are law-enforcement certified and can carry weapons.
