Troopers find 29 pounds of meth in Knox County traffic stop

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — State troopers arrested a Texas man on felony drug charges after a traffic stop led to the discovery of 29 pounds of crystal meth.

THP Knox County meth bustA trooper stopped a 2003 Chevy Suburban for a traffic violation around 3:40 p.m. Monday on Interstate 40 in Knox County, according to a release from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

Troopers say the driver, later identified as Juan Munoz, 48, of Dallas, Texas, gave conflicting stories about his travel destinations.

Officers got consent to search the vehicle and found a shrink-wrapped package of crystal meth weighing just more than a pound inside one of the seats, according to the release.

The vehicle was moved to a TDOT facility where investigators went on to find 23 shrink-wrapped packaged of “ice” methamphetamine with a total weight of 29 pounds located inside several of the vehicle’s seats.

Troopers also seized the vehicle and $378 in cash.

Munoz was arrested and charged with felony possession of schedule II with intent to sell and deliver. The Drug Enforcement Agency was contacted to take on the case for federal prosecution.

Munoz was transported to the Knox County jail.
