Veterans help fellow vet in Savannah
HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — A story of heroes helping heroes unfolds right here in West Tennessee as an entire community, led by a group of veterans, are putting a new roof on the home of an 82-year-old war veteran.
“It’s just a blessing. I just can’t describe it any better,” Delores Harville said.
The Savannah American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have pooled their resources to donate a roof and said it wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community.
“I’m proud that I’m a veteran and that I am able to help a veteran that needs help,” said member Tommy Lewis. “We have a good group of business people in Hardin County that are wiling to help you if you’re on the right project.”
J.C. Harville served in the army during the Korean War and says it was his daughter who made the call to the VA.
“They’re used to doing for others, and it’s hard for them to accept the help. That’s hard for him, but then he tears up. You don’t want to lose your manhood or anything when you’re used to taking care of your family,” Delores said.
Delores said they couldn’t afford a new roof on their own and J.C. couldn’t physically make the repairs, but he always stayed in good spirits.
Those in the community are more than happy to give back to someone who gave so much to this county. “We don’t do it for any glory or an kind of anything,” Lewis said.
The project has taken about a month, and the final touches are now being put on the roof.
