Chickasaw County governments now eligible for tornado aid

PEARL, Miss. (AP) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared another Mississippi county eligible for aid to governments after Dec. 23 tornadoes killed 11 people in the state.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency on Friday said governments and certain nonprofit groups including electrical cooperatives in Chickasaw County are now eligible for assistance. That public assistance helps pay for debris removal and repairs to damaged roads, bridges, buildings and other infrastructure.

FEMA previously declared Benton, Clay, Coahoma, Itawamba, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie and Tippah counties eligible.

Residents in eight counties can get individual assistance covering costs including temporary housing, uninsured property losses, plus low-interest disaster loans. They are Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman and Tippah counties.

Residents have until March 4 to register at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
