JACKSON, Tenn.–People of all different faiths celebrated the National Day of Prayer on Thursday. Hundreds started their day talking to God in Jackson. People packed the Carl Perkins Civic Center for the mayor‘s annual prayer breakfast. “It’s a great opportunity to be unified, unified for one cause,” said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. The Jackson Area Ministerial Association hosted the event. Politicians, law enforcement, and people from all different faiths came together to pray. “I want them to see the people that build this community,” said Anna Parks-Covington, a teacher at Tigrett Middle School. Parks-Covington attended the prayer breakfast with some of her students. “Most of all I want them to see the city coming together to worship and to honor the day of prayer,” she said. Parishioners at St. Mary‘s Catholic Church also participated in the National Day of Prayer. “Prayer’s going on all over the country,” said Father Thomas Kirk. “This will have its affects.” The church recently built a chapel that is open all the time. People take turns praying in shifts around the clock. “If people believe in the power of prayer, they’ll find the results, the affects,” said Father Kirk. Northside Assembly of God provided the music at Thursday‘s prayer breakfast. The theme for this year‘s National Day of Prayer is “Pray for America.”
