Areas Hit by Flooding May get Second Strike

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. – West Tennessee is bracing for more rain, after many areas became flooded earlier this week. It does not take much rain for part of Highway 189 in Crockett County to flood and become dangerous for drivers. “It’s flooded for years, and we just more or less expect it now,” said resident Randy Spann. “They flood every time,” said Joe Jones, Crockett County’s EMA Director. “I have probably seven roads that you can just write down right now that will be flooded.” And emergency management officials said it takes about two days for the water to go down. Unfortunately, there is not much they can do. “I’ve talked to hydrologists at Memphis,” Jones said. “They’ve come and looked at the roads, and all they can say is just put out a road closure alert.” Jones said they have about 100 cones ready to block off the roads if they need to. “After it gets about two inches, then we start blocking,” he said. Residents said it is a big inconvenience, especially for Spann, who is in the trucking business. “A few more miles, and miles is money, you know,” Spann said. But some said as long as the water does not get into their homes, they can deal with it. Emergency management officials said if you are driving and see water over the yellow lines on the road – do not chance it. Turn around and take another route.
