AKA Sorority, Inc. celebrates 108th anniversary
JACKSON, Tenn — The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated the organization’s 108th Founders Day Sunday afternoon at New St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church.
The sorority was the first Greek-lettered organization established by black women.
Members said it’s a legacy they’re proud to be able to carry on into their community.
“It means a whole lot to all of us to be able to be in existence for this long to be able to service mankind. It’s just wonderful,” AKA founders day Chairperson, Joyce Peoples said. “You can be anything that you want to be, but be willing to give back to the community and that’s what we’re doing.”
During the celebration, the sorority honored high school scholars.
There are more than 170,000 members in the sorority worldwide.
