Accused gunman charged with murder in east Jackson robbery

JACKSON, Tenn. — A murder suspect faced a judge Monday, more than a month after he is accused of killing and robbing a man in Jackson.

SWIFTJoshua Swift, 21, appeared Monday in Jackson City Court, charged with felony murder and especially aggravated robbery.

“Do you work, sir?” Judge Blake Anderson asked. “No, sir,” Swift responded.

Swift is accused of killing Gregory Robinson, 27, on Jan. 18. Court documents said three men entered a home on Larimer Drive, stole money and marijuana from the victim, then shot him twice. Police said they saw no sign of forced entry.

Investigators said witnesses identified Swift in a photo lineup as one of the men who is responsible.

“Do you have an alcohol or drug problem?” Judge Anderson asked. “No, sir,” Swift said.

Swift told the judge he wants a lawyer but could not hire one. “If you’re not able to hire it, I’m going to appoint the public defender,” Judge Anderson said.

Records show Swift has a lengthy criminal history that includes prior arrests for robbery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, and violation of criminal gang offenses.

Swift is being held at the Madison County Jail in lieu of a $300,000 bond. He is due back in court March 3.
