Last day of early voting brings out Presidential Preference Primary record
MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — As the last day of early voting has drawn to a close, local election officials say they saw a new record turnout for a Presidential Preference Primary.
A total of 1,436 voters cast ballots at the Madison County Agricultural Auditorium on Tuesday. Of those, 958 cast votes in the Republican Primary while 478 voted in the Democratic Primary, according to Administrator of Elections Kim Buckley.
This brings the grand total of early voters in the Presidential Preference Primary to 5,448, which is almost 9 percent of the 60,962 registered voters in Madison County, according to the Madison County Election Commission.
Of the total turnout for the primary, 1,958 voted in the Democratic Primary while 3,490 voted in the Republican Primary.
Due to a slow start in the early voting for this year’s primary, this turnout does not exceed the record of 6,248 set in 2008, according to the commission. However, there were two additional days in the 2008 early voting period.
Voters who intend to vote on Election Day must vote at the polling place listed on their voter registration card. For more information about your polling location, visit the Election Commission website at madisonelections.com or call the office at 731-660-1796.
The early voting site will not be a voting place on Election Day.
Voters who have moved since the last time they voted should go to the Election Commission office immediately to update their voter registration record. The Election Commission office, located at 311 North Parkway in Jackson, will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each weekday.
A photo ID issued by the Tennessee state government or the Federal government must be presented in order to vote.
