BROWNSVILLE, Tenn- Farmers in Haywood County said an upcoming tax increase on their property could affect the fate of their farms. According to Haywood County’s Tax Assessor, Dare T. Simpson, farm appraisals have gone up close to 50 percent in the county since 2007, causing taxes for farmers to increase in the upcoming weeks. Although it is still not decided just how much the hike will be, some farmers said they may have to sell parts of their land to afford the taxes. Others are hoping for a plentiful harvest to cover the increase. “That’s a fixed expense for us,” said Haywood County farmer, John Willis. “And whether we have a good or bad year due to weather, we still have no control over it.” County commissioners are set to vote on the increase in the upcoming weeks.
