Police: Brownsville man in custody after shooting wife

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A Brownsville man is behind bars, accused of shooting his own wife after barricading them inside their home. It’s a shocking crime that’s left many in the neighborhood puzzled.

But what’s even more shocking about this crime is that neighbors said the seemingly happy couple was out cleaning up their yard just days before.

“Everything was so normal,” neighbor Francisco Godoy said. “I mean you would have never thought they would have had any issues or anything.”

Brownsville police are calling this a violent domestic dispute with a husband shooting his wife and calling police before he did it.

The woman was airlifted to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis. When asked if there was a history of calls to this home, police said they were looking into that.

“He did say he was going to kill her,” Assistant Brownsville Police Chief Kelvin Evans said. “Once we got on scene he ended up barricading himself inside the house.”

It took officers 15 minutes to take the man into custody. Investigators said a relative was able to call and convince him to come out.

“We talked him out of the house, and once he got out he complied with our commands and he walked out and we took him into custody,” Evans said.

Investigators said once they got in the home they found the man’s wife with a single gunshot wound. She was immediately flown to a Memphis hospital.

Residents who live in the small, quiet neighborhood said they have never seen a scene like this. They said the neighbors who were involved in this incident are normally even quieter.

“They didn’t get in your business,” Godoy said. “I mean, you could wave and say ‘how are you,’ but that was it.”

Neighbors said the couple has lived on Hillcrest Drive for years and were known for their immaculate lawn. They were seen working outside just a day before.

“They were out all the time cleaning their yard. Tuesday they were cleaning the leaves off their property,” Godoy said.

Brownsville police have not yet released the name of the victim or her husband. He’s expected to be formally charged Thursday.
