Surgoinsville water system faces fines related to violations
SURGOINSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Surgoinsville Utility District is facing state fines related to various violations including a chlorine feed system failure and turbidity issues.
The Kingsport Times-News reports that Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Robert Martineau Jr. signed an order on Feb. 26, addressing violations including failure to disinfect water by chlorination and failure to report turbidity exceedances.
The order has fined the utility an upfront penalty of $33,880 which is due to the Division of Water Resources. Depending on future compliance, the fine could reach as high as $169,380.
Utility general manager Rita Dykes said in a statement Thursday that the utility is aware of the order and is reviewing it with legal counsel. Dykes says the utility has taken care of previous compliance issues.
