Grant delay could leave residents with HIV, AIDS homeless
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) – Officials say a delayed federal grant could leave some people with HIV and AIDS in Mississippi homeless next month.
The Sun Herald reports the South Mississippi AIDS Task Force administers a Supportive Housing Program grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development worth about $103,000 a year. It helps house nine families.
The renewed grant was supposed to pick up March 1, but it has been delayed nationally.
Board President Allen Jenkins is confident the grant will eventually be renewed, but says the agency doesn’t have the resources to house those families for what could be up to three months.
The nonprofit organization is seeking funding sources and working with other agencies that may be able to assume expenses for its clients for the next few months.
