Governor Signs Law Requiring Interlock Devices

JACKSON, Tenn.- Governor Haslam signed a new ignition interlocking bill into law, Thursday, that requires everyone who gets a DUI to have the breathalyzer device in their car. The law lowered the intoxication level from .15 to .08, and was unanimously approved 95-0 in the House and 31-0 in the Senate. “You know some people are going to say, ‘this is my first time’,” said Sgt. Joseph Gill with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. “My response to that is ‘don’t drink and drive!” The device will allow cars to turn on if the driver passes the breath test with less than a .02 blood alcohol level. The bill also means DUI offenders will not receive a restricted drivers license, and will be allowed to drive anywhere. “If you’re going to drink and drive these are the consequences. We see too many people that die and one person dying of a drunk driver is one too many,” said Sgt. Gill. The bill will go into effect July 1.
