Mississippi’s largest hospital group names new state leader

FLOWOOD, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi’s largest hospital operator has named a new chief executive for its in-state operations.

Brentwood, Tennessee-based Community Health Systems has appointed Steve Dobbs to lead its 12 hospitals, which operate as Merit Health.

The hospitals in Amory, Batesville, Biloxi, Brandon, Canton, Clarksdale, Flowood, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Natchez and Vicksburg collectively provided about 13 percent of all hospital patient nights in 2014, according to state Health Department statistics.

Dobbs previously led the for-profit company’s six hospitals in the Jackson and Vicksburg areas. Community Health Systems bought the former Health Management Associates in 2014 for $3.9 billion, gaining control of most of the Mississippi hospitals it now owns.
