Peacocks on the Loose in Lambuth Area

JACKSON, Tenn.- Two Peacocks roaming through the city are getting a lot of attention. Residents said the birds have been spotted several times in different neighborhoods. “I looked around the corner out of my house and there they were just doing what peacocks do, scrounging around looking for something to eat, ” said witness Tilman Corum. The birds were spotted near Lambuth campus Saturday and Sunday. “I would say somebody turned them loose or they got away from somebody’s house or something,” said neighbor Harold Sellers. “They make lots of sounds, they could be most anywhere because there are a ton of trees around here they could be in.” Residents said the peacocks have been seen trampling through gardens, and sunbathing on rooftops near Ingram Street, Monday. “Yeah, they are getting around pretty much they are in flight, I saw them up on that roof,” said witness Johnny Prather. “It’s been a while since I’ve seen one, the last time was a long time ago at the Zoo.” Zoo officials told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that the peacock is not considered to be a dangerous animal. They said the birds are known for roaming especially during their mating season months April through September. “Spring is a time for birds to do strange things,” said Corum. “Anything that represents a danger to them they will stay away from so they are probably okay unless some nut with a gun decides to target practice.” Officials said although the birds are safe to watch. However, they do not recommend anyone trying to capture or go near them. If a male peacock feels threatened it will spread open its wings to appear larger than its enemy. Experts said they are generally peaceful animals, until threatened. If you come in contact with the lost birds and feel threatened call Jackson Police at (731) 425-8400.
