Jackson City Council Spends Day Considering Budget

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Jackson City Council met Tuesday with the hopes of reaching a deal on a budget and they seem to be on the right path. The first reading of the budget passed unanimously. The total budget is $64 million, up $500,000 from last year. If passed, the city plans to buy two new fire trucks and 25 new police cars. Public works would also pave several streets and do some needed sewer work. There is no budget cuts for individual departments. Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist credits the departments for not overspending. “We’re stable. It has not been easy. Our people have struggled a little bit, infrastructure has struggled a little bit, but we’re coming out very slowly and looking forward to moving ahead,” said Mayor Jerry Gist. The second reading is scheduled for June 4.
