Active shooter drill at JSCC trains 7 agencies

JACKSON, Tenn. — Active shooter training that could possibly save lives brought several agencies together Monday at one local college.

13007266_261893994147721_5744845068115915885_nTraining brought seven agencies together at Jackson State Community College to learn how to take down an active shooter and help save lives in a real crisis.

“We are aware that these things are going on and they are happening throughout the nation, and the thing is we want to be the best prepared as possible,” JSCC Vice President of Administrative Affairs Horace Chase said.

“Today, what we are doing is an active shooter drill in order to make sure that our campus is in the preparation stage in prevention of anything that could happen, and that’s including an active shooter,” Campus Police Chief Darron Billings said.

Law enforcement swept the hallways of the McWherter Center to find their target.

“All the areas, EMS, all those are here to play their role so they can actually show and understand and communicate to the things that we need to do in case we have an active shooter,” Chase said. “We want to make sure that we provide a safe environment for our campus community.”

After the active shooter training, nursing students were transported to the gym where a mock triage station was set up, and first responders are teaching them how to respond in this kind of situation.

“It’s extremely important that we continue to train. If we don’t train, we don’t know exactly how we are going to react,” Chief Billings said. “But we must be able to be prepared for anything and everything that might happen on campus.”

Around 100 law enforcement officers and first responders attended the training.
