Lane College goes tobacco free
JACKSON, Tenn. — Lane College has banned tobacco on campus.
“More than anything we want to provide a safe environment for our students,” Lane College Nurse Alicia Moore said.
Moore said the school received a $2,500 grant that pays for signage and student interns to get the word out. “There is no smoking, no tobacco use inside of buildings, outside of buildings, throughout the campus, not even in your car,” she said.
Tyanna Hill, a freshman, said smoking does not bother her but that the new policy is good for people with health issues. “It’s a girl on my floor that has really bad asthma, so if someone even smokes around her like no telling what’ll happen,” Hill said.
“Helps keep the campus a lot cleaner than it used to be,” Kendric Miller, a senior, said.
Moore said if someone is caught smoking on campus they’ll receive a reminder letting them know it is a tobacco free campus. “You may be referred to the dean of students if you’re just chronically just, if it’s just ongoing,” she said.
Moore said they hope to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking. “One in five Americans are dying daily from smoking,” she said.
Lane College said it joined 41 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities in an effort to go tobacco free.
