Caretaker Accused of Stealing More Than $60,000 from Elderly Couple

TRENTON, Tenn. – Trenton Police Chief Will Sanders said an elderly couple worked and saved their whole lives. Then, they had their life savings stolen by a trusted caretaker. “They discovered that some checks missing, and, in going to the bank and checking with the bank, they realized there was a problem. They came to our department and reported it to us,” he said. Sandra Mitchell, who helped take care of the couple for more than a decade, is charged with felony theft of more than $60,000. Sanders said Mitchell was so trusted, the couple purchased her a vehicle. Trenton Police hope to also pursue federal charges against Mitchell. “We will continue our investigation and to identify and recover any funds that we can,” Sanders said. Bank of Jackson CEO Gary Grisham said the best way people can protect themselves is to be alert and monitor all accounts. Grisham said if a customer suspects fraudulent activity they have 60 days to report it to their bank. “When those statements go out, you need to open those banks statements and look at those transactions,” Grisham said. Chief Sanders said Mitchell is currently on probation because of an unrelated embezzlement charge. Sanders said he wants this case to be a warning to everyone and especially to those inviting others into their homes. Sanders said Mitchell will have to go to court for probation violation from the previous charge. Mitchell is currently out of jail on bond.
