Report: Group nixes goodwill events, cites Mississippi law
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) – A group that raises money to send a Georgia student to a Mississippi college or university has canceled its goodwill events apparently in protest over the state’s new “religious freedom” law.
The Sun Herald reports the Mississippi Society of Georgia canceled fundraising events scheduled to take place in Atlanta in June.
The group said the cancellation was due to the “controversy and circumstances with passage of the recent Mississippi legislation.” The group called itself “a diverse and inclusive organization.”
Earlier this Gov. Phil Bryant signed a law that allows religious groups and private businesses to deny services to gay and transgender people.
Supporters of the law say it protects people with deeply held religious beliefs from lawsuits by people they refuse to serve because of those beliefs.
