Memorial Day Service Honors Fallen Soldiers

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. – People in Carroll County came together on Memorial Day to remember servicemen and servicewomen killed in the line of duty. Their sacrifice deserves recognition. “Anytime we can give back to these people, they’ve given so much to us,” said Drake Jenkins, a volunteer with Huntingdon Church of Christ. “Really, we’re just thanking them for all their years of service.” Jenkins and other volunteers passed out red flowers and pins. Workers spent the morning making sure every detail for the ceremony was right. “We all have family members that have served,” said Jenkins. “We all have family, friends that have served.” The city of Huntingdon honored veterans and fallen soldiers Monday with a ceremony. “It’s just a great honor to serve,” said Franklin D. Myers, a veteran who served in the United States Army. “We consider ourselves the fortunate ones. The ones that survived. But, there were so many that didn’t,” said Bill Byars, a veteran. Byars was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. “It was not a very pleasant experience, but at the same time it was something that had to be done,” he said. The community said thank you. “Don’t take freedom for granted,” said Jenkins. “We’re here because of them.” The city of McKenzie also held a ceremony Monday to honor servicemen and servicewomen killed in the line of duty.
