Woman killed in 2 vehicle crash at US 49/Mississippi 53
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – Police say 65-year-old Gulfport woman died at a hospital after her car was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light at U.S. 49 at Mississippi 53.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove The Sun Herald Scotty Barfield had left her son’s house with her one-year-old grandchild when her vehicle was “broadsided” Sunday afternoon.
Hargrove says Barfield died of blunt-force trauma at Garden Park Medical Center about 35 minutes after the crash was reported. Barfield’s grandchild remains hospitalized.
Gulfport Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel says a 19-year-old man, southbound on U.S. 49, ran a red light and struck Barfield’s car.
The crash was the second fatal wreck at that intersection since Feb. 10, when a rear-end collision resulted in a six-car pileup that killed three people and injured two.
