Search for new Phoenix police chief back to 9 semifinalists

PHOENIX (AP) – The Phoenix City Manager’s Office is back to nine semifinalists in its search for a new police chief.

City officials announced Monday that Deputy Police Chief Nathaniel Allen of Knoxville, Tennessee has withdrawn his candidacy. They say Allen has been offered a police chief position in another city.

Allen had been added to Phoenix’s list two weeks ago to replace another candidate who had dropped out.

Phoenix’s semifinalist list still includes two internal candidates – Executive Assistant Chief Dave Harvey and Assistant Chief Mike Kurtenbach.

Another candidate is former Phoenix assistant chief Jeri Williams, who currently is police chief in Oxnard, California.

Phoenix is trying to fill the position before Chief Joseph Yahner retires in October. He was appointed in February 2015.
