Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Amy Neilson
LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Amy Neilson said, “when I leave and go home in the afternoon, normally I ‘m smiling and I ‘m laughing and I think about the fun things that we’ve done during the day.”
She said every day is fun and a new learning adventure at Bargerton Elementary School.
“With 4 and 5-year-olds, you don’t know what will happen, what will be said, just, we make memories every day,” she said.
Neilson has been teaching for 2 years and said she was able to student teach at Bargerton before she took on the full-time role.
“After I went to college and I tried a lot of other things, I was like this just isn’t working. So I picked education and I have loved it ever since then.”
She actually changed her major six times before choosing education and said she got the idea to teach after working many summers at Midsouth Youth Camp in Henderson, Tennessee.
“Through all the experiences there and working with all the younger children there, I just felt like I was led to teach.”
Neilson refers to her class as her pre-k family and enjoys the loving atmosphere that Bargerton has.
“Miss Angie, who teaches with me in the classroom, she is the best person that you could ever teach with,” Neilson said. “I feel like I come to school, I teach with my best friend, which makes it even better everyday.”
Neilson will now be eligible for the state-wide Tennessee Education Lottery, Educator of the Month award.
