Danny Glover speaks words of wisdom at Lane’s Commencement

JACKSON, Tenn.—Hundreds of people gathered at the Oman Arena to celebrate the 175 new Lane College Alumni…and gain some wisdom from a noted actor and human rights activist.

“We have to be a more people orientated society than a thing orientated society,” actor Danny Glover said after he gave the commencement speech.

Glover is known for his roles in the Ethan Weapon series and his human rights activism.

“Remember your call to service and feel encouraged that you have the potential and the opportunity to affect real change in our society and the world,” he said.

Students, alumni, and other supporters of the graduates said Glover spoke the right words on this new chapter in life.

“It was so great to have words of wisdom and motivation to motivate me to go on in the rest of my life I’m so honored,” Jaime Robinson said. Robinson is a first generation student and the valedictorian of her class. “Inspiring, motivating, shock in awe moment to see him in person it was, everything and more than what I thought it would be.”

“I wanted them to understand themselves and realize themselves is not only an alumni of this wonderful institution but flu fledged citizens,” Glover said.

Glover also focused his speech on encouraging the class of 2016 to continue their hard work and to become more active in their communities, ecause he says he believes this is a pivotal moment in history.
