National Correction Officers Week kicks off Sunday

JACKSON, Tenn. — This week kicks off a special week for law enforcement all across the country. Today is the first day of National Correction Officers Week.

Screen Shot 2016-05-01 at 9.34.31 PMThe week honors those who work in correctional facilities and the difficult tasks they face everyday. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed this week to honor the public safety workers 22 years ago.

“Well, it’s a demanding job and it’s just giving them respect and honor; and if you know the correctional officers you know tell them you
appreciate them for what they do and what they go through,” says Madison County Sheriff John Mehr.

Officials say there are around 10,000 correctional officers currently working in the state of Tennessee.
