“Melanoma Monday” sheds light on skin cancer dangers
JACKSON, Tenn.-Dozens in the Hub City took advantage of “Melanoma Monday”, a day of free screenings at the Kirkland Cancer Center.
Just ahead of the summer season, the first Monday of every May is set aside to shed new light on the dangers of skin cancer.
More than 76,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
Experts say the earlier the diagnosis, the better the chance of survival.
“Melanoma can be a fatal skin cancer so the earlier detection per screening can help prevent those from occurring,” said Susan Barker, with the Kirkland Cancer Center.
Health officials said one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
