Memphis interim police director applying for permanent job

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Officials say interim Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings is applying for the permanent position.

According to The Commercial Appeal, Mayor Jim Strickland said Monday that he asked Rallings to apply for the permanent job, and Rallings agreed.

Strickland said Rallings’ application wouldn’t affect the national search for a new director. The city is paying the International Association of Chiefs of Police $30,000 to $40,000 to conduct the search, which Strickland said is still on track to conclude in July or August.

Strickland said he is not calling off the search, but he asked Rallings to apply “as part of the process.”

Rallings, who has been with the department since he joined the police academy in 1990, succeeded Toney Armstrong earlier this year.
