School board approves ‘Vision 2020’ construction bids

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson-Madison County School System is one step closer to implementing its “Vision 2020” restructuring plan after board members approved construction bids Tuesday night.

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 9.45.31 PMWhen “Vision 2020” was passed in December, the closing of some schools and the combining of others meant modifications had to be made to some buildings. With the board’s approval, the work can begin after classes adjourn for the summer.

The board approved $1,160,607 in construction bids for additions and adjustments to five schools including Rose Hill, Tigrett, Northeast, Pope and the Early College High School at JCM.

The largest project is at JCM, which includes brand new lights, HVAC upgrades and the removal of lead paint. Some of the smaller projects include things like adjustments to parking lots and the relocation of portable classrooms.

“We’re going to things like new roofs, new parking and space for families to drop off and pick up their children,” Superintendent Verna Ruffin said.

Construction at all schools except JCM is expected to be finished by July 18 while JCM is expected to be finished by Aug. 15.
