Mayor will reward those striving to ‘Keep Jackson Beautiful’
JACKSON, Tenn. — City officials believe residents should be able to take pride in the place they call home.
For more than 25 years, the mayor of Jackson has recognized individuals and businesses for doing their part to “Keep Jackson Beautiful.”
“Mayor’s Civic Pride is about how you present your house,” said Keep Jackson Beautiful coordinator Jodi Jacobs. “It’s not just about your yard — it’s the overall appearance.”
Nomination forms for the Mayor’s Civic Pride awards are available in the planning office at City Hall. Entries for categories including commercial, institutional and residential properties will be accepted through May 20.
“We have master gardeners go out and judge, and they look at the whole makeup and if you stick out in your neighborhood,” Jacobs said.
Master gardeners from the University of Tennessee extension here in Jackson are one of the largest groups that volunteer with Keep Jackson Beautiful and will judge the Civic Pride Awards.
“It’s important because we want to put our best foot forward,” extension agent Celeste Scott said. “You want to have the beautification projects going on, and this surely is one that we’re happy to help with.”
Although landscaping and beautification are factors judges will consider, the competition is really about keeping the city presentable.
“This one’s mainly just awareness that we want the city to be clean and we recognize the people that put in the time and the effort to Keep Jackson Beautiful,” Jacobs said.
“I think it’s great that the mayor is putting those awards out there,” Scott said. “It kind of gives people something to strive towards, an accomplishment to achieve.”
Old Town Spaghetti Store and the Woods of Post House apartments were a few of last year’s winners.
The Mayor’s Civic Pride Award winners will be announced in June at the annual awards luncheon. If you would like to know more about the Civic Pride Awards or get involved in master gardeners, that information is below.
