2 in custody, 1 on run after Dyer Co. manhunt
DYER COUNTY, Tenn. — A massive manhunt goes on for hours,Tuesday night in Dyer County with dozens of officers searching hundreds of acres.
Two people are in custody after deputies said they crashed a stolen car and took off, but one remains on the run.
Dyer County deputies said they caught up with the trio Tuesday afternoon in a stolen car from a Millington car dealer. They eventually lead officers on a pursuit across the county.
“The officers lost contact with the vehicle but the THP chopper picked it back up,” Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box said. “That’s when they came up Sorrels Chapel Road and ended up crashing in the wooded area.”
The woman in the vehicle immediately surrendered but the two men ditched the car and took off running into the woods. One was arrested a few hours later after he called police himself.
“He actually called my dispatch center and said that he wanted to surrender and come out,” Sheriff Box said. “So I told them to tell him to come out in the center of this field over here with his hands up.”
Officers said the third suspect remains on the run and has a lengthy history.
“There was a lot of manpower out here looking for him,” Box said. “This subject has a burglary and theft history so we do want people to be aware and call 911 if they see anything.”
Deputies said they believe the two men may also be involved in a burglary that happened in the county, Tuesday morning. The sheriff said they are continuing to search for that third suspect.
The names of the suspects have not yet been released. Deputies said they will face various charges including evading arrest and vehicle theft.
