Springfield police: 7-year-old brings loaded gun to school
SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) – A Springfield elementary school was placed on lockdown after officials say a 7-year-old student brought a loaded gun to school.
The Tennessean reports the incident happened Thursday morning at Westside Elementary School. No one was hurt.
Springfield Police Chief David Thompson says the child had showed the gun to another student, who then told a teacher.
The teacher contacted school administrators who then called authorities. Thompson says the gun was found in the 7-year-old’s backpack.
The school was placed on lockdown, and parents were notified.
Robertson County Schools said in a statement that the lockdown was lifted shortly after police arrived.
Thompson says the child was not threatening anyone with the weapon. Police say the boy was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.
Authorities are continuing to investigate.
