City Council Passes Budget, Parking Ticket Collections

JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson‘s 2013-2104 budget is in place after it was passed by the Jackson City Council on second reading, Tuesday morning. The $64 million plan passed unanimously and is an increase of only $500,000 from the previous year. The spending plan allocates funds for two new fire trucks and 25 new police cars. The public works department was also allocated funds to pave several streets and complete some much needed sewer work. Mayor Jerry Gist said that there were no budget cuts for individual department. “No new taxes. The tax rate will remain the same and, hopefully, we‘ll be good stewards and spend the money efficiently and effectively in our city for this year,” he stated. During Tuesday‘s meeting, the city council also voted to allow unpaid parking tickets to be sent to a collection agency. City leaders said this method is less costly than having city workers try and collect the monies themselves.
