Wet Weather Could Lead to More Mosquitoes

JACKSON, Tenn. – The excess rain and hot weather in the forecast could lead to more mosquitoes as summer approaches. The Madison County Health Department says there have been no reports of these pesky bugs so far. The soggy spring weather and the cooler than normal temperatures could have something to do with the mosquitoes. As the temperatures begin to rise over the next month, all standing water in the area will become a hot spot for mosquitoes to breed. Russ McKelvey from Mack Pest Control says, “Mosquitoes and moisture go hand in hand they breed in areas of standing water that is perfectly still this can be in gutters if standing water is there, pots, old tires, children’s kiddy pools, anything that can hold standing water is a breeding ground.” It is still very early in the season to notice an increase in mosquitos. Here in West Tennessee many areas have seen an excess of 10 inches of rain this spring. This can be a problem for your health this summer if standing water around your home is present. McKelvey says, “You’re only limited at what you can do around your own home it’s mosquitoes. They’re everyone’s problem.” Cleaning your gutters, putting dirt in low-lying areas where water is standing, and checking potted plants for water now will be beneficial before summer arrives. Using bug spray with deet and staying out of the woods from dusk to dawn is a good way to protect yourself from bug bites.
