Police say TV news helped victim ID counterfeit money suspect

JACKSON, Tenn. — Police say a man accused of passing counterfeit money is facing charges after an alleged victim recognized him from the news.

Martez Curry is charged with theft and criminal simulation on accusations of using counterfeit cash to buy a video game console from a Craigslist seller, according to court papers.

The seller told police a man later identified as Curry contacted him about buying an Xbox posted on Craigslist. The seller later found the money to be counterfeit.

Later on, the victim recognized the buyer’s photo being aired on the news where he was suspected of spending counterfeit money in an unrelated case, according to the affidavit.

Police say and investigator printed the article from the WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News website and that the victim identified the person who bought the Xbox.

Curry is being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond. He is set to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. June 30.
