Local singer reflects on late Memphis Horns musician Wayne Jackson
JACKSON, Tenn. — A local veteran of the music industry stopped to reflect Wednesday after the death this week of a renown trumpet player.
Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns died of congested heart failure Tuesday night at the age of 74.
The group started with six but soon became a prominent duo between Jackson and Andrew Love. Jackson was the trumpet player of the group.
Denise LaSalle, recognized as the Queen of Blues, spoke to WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News about what she remembers most about him.
“Wayne Jackson was one of the most gifted young men with horns that I ever seen in my life,” LaSalle said of her experience recording with the late musician. “He was good — not only playing the horn, but he was a good director.”
The Memphis Horns received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February of 2012 — only the second instrumental group to have received the honor at the time.
