Iconic Nashville soda shop hosts new USPS stamps launch

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Five years ago, the future seemed grim for a Nashville soda shop that opened during the Great Depression. Faced with a rent increase, the Elliston Place Soda Shop hung a sign on the door: It would be closing for good.

Days later, the lunchtime line was out the door and down the block. Soon the old-fashioned shop had a new lease, a new owner and new popularity. It’s a natural spot for Thursday’s launch party for the U.S. Postal Service’s new “soda fountain favorites” stamps.

Elliston Place was chosen in part because it still offers all five desserts depicted on the stamps – double-scoop ice cream cone, egg cream, banana split, root beer float and hot fudge sundae.
