State senator accused of using shovel in fight

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A Mississippi lawmaker who was charged with aggravated assault is accused of using a shovel while fighting in a suburban neighborhood.

State Sen. Chris Massey of Nesbit, his father and two other men were arrested Thursday morning in Olive Branch, just outside Memphis, Tennessee.

Chief Don Gammage tells The Associated Press that the 44-year-old Massey, who’s a homebuilder, is accused of hurting another person with a shovel.

A judge posted a $10,000 bond for Massey, and the senator was released from jail within hours of his arrest.

Calls to Massey’s cellphone were not immediately answered. The Republican from Nesbit has been a senator since 2012.
