Dead period for coaches

JACKSON, Tenn — In high school sports, coaches and players are forced to have a two week period with no communication or mandatory workouts. For players, well some, this may seem like heaven and a chance to enjoy summer with no extra obligations.

For coaches this time is supposed to be used as free time before the season grind begins. But for USJ head coach Rusty Bradley, he was ready to get back to work after just three days of his supposed to be relaxation time.

Bradley said football is his only real hobby. He doesn’t do much on a day to day basis that doesn’t include football. He noted he only has to fill his car up once every six weeks because he lives so close to home.

“I think the first two days I was relaxed, it was fun, about day three I was bored, and you know I was ready for them to come back,” Bradley said.  “I was just antsy, this being my first year. So there was definitely a restlessness. You know I’d wake up with an idea, and then dag gummit it’s eight more days before I can talk to anybody. So it was definitely hard. It was good to have some time away.”

The team will continue to condition and lift this week, before throwing the shoulder pads and helmets on for three days next week. The following week will kick off their two-a-days.
