Stolen mobile home from Alabama recovered in Benton County

BENTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A stolen mobile home from Alabama was found in West Tennessee after months of investigation, and authorities say those respobisble are still on the loose.

IMG_20160718_115300436_HDRInvestigators from Double Springs, Ala., contacted the Benton County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week about a stolen mobile home saying that after two months of investigation their search landed them in Benton County.

“He had gotten information from an informant that it was possibly on a property, or one of two properties, in Benton County,” Investigator Alan Bolan said.

The mobile home had been sitting on a lot just outside Camden since the middle of May, according to investigators. The owner of the property did not want to be identified but did say he had no idea the home was stolen.

“I didn’t have no reason to doubt what they were saying to me or anyone else,” the owner said.

Investigators said the home had been for sale in Double Springs. They believe Robert Handley and his son Robert Handley Jr. stole the mobile home sometime after dark earlier in May and then drove it to Benton County.

“Originally, I hired him to move a single-wide trailer for me from down here at the Beaver Dam,” the owner of the property said. “So he moved that trailer, and then he was supposed to come back and do some work on the inside of it.”

Officials say Handley has asked the owner of the property to set the mobile home up so he could stay in it while working here in Camden. The home had been taken off the trailer and placed on cinder blocks, leveled and hooked up to electricity.

Investigators say right now no charges are being filed in Benton County but that the investigation is ongoing.

The mobile home has been returned to the owner. Officers with the Double Springs Police Department say they have issued warrants for both men but that they haven’t been taken into custody. Both men will face charges of theft in the first degree.
