Newbern Police arrest Murfreesboro man accused of aggravated rape

NEWBERN, Tenn. — Police in Newbern have arrested a Murfreesboro man on charges including aggravated rape.

Authorities confirm 38-year-old Michael Crittendon was taken into custody Wednesday after warrants were issued for his arrest.

According to the Newbern Police Department, on Wednesday, officers responded to a call of a woman reporting that she had been sexually assaulted.

Police say a 23-year-old female informed them that while in the company of a male, he produced a handgun and refused to let her leave the location.

According to police, the victim further stated that the subject assaulted her by striking her in the face, then sexually assaulted her while threatening her with the handgun.

Police say that due to the crime occurring within the City of Newbern and extending outside the city limits, the Newbern Police Department and Dyer County Sheriff’s Office conducted a joint investigation.

Crittendon was arrested and is being charged with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and armed dangerous felonies. Newbern police shared that he is a prior convicted felon.

According to police, Crittendon is being held in the Dyer County Law Enforcement Center pending court action by Newbern City Court, and he has additional charges pending by the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office.

Newbern Police Chief Greg Barr stated:

“Crittendon was developed as a suspect last night by the responding officers of the NPD patrol division. The information gathered by responding officers on the scene, and the continued investigation by the NPD criminal investigation division along with the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigation division throughout last night, resulted in the quick arrest of this alleged violent offender.” “I want to commend our patrol officers, assigned to B squad, who were able to quickly identify and locate the suspect in a very timely manner.”
