Memphis police officer accused of sexual battery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Prosecutors say a Memphis police officer has been arrested on charges of aggravated sexual battery and official misconduct.

Memphis police tell news outlets that 46-year-old Officer Edrick Braxton was taken into custody on Wednesday.

The Commercial Appeal reports Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich confirmed that a grand jury indicted Braxton on the charges on Tuesday.

Officials have not released any details surrounding the charges.

Memphis police spokesman Louis Brownlee says Braxton has also been relieved of duty with pay. He had been with the police department since 2010.

Braxton remained behind bars at the Shelby County Jail as of late Wednesday. No bond or court date had been set.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Braxton has an attorney to comment on the charges.
