Self-defense class set after Gulfport deaf couple attacked
OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) – A self-defense class will be offered to members of Mississippi’s hearing-impaired community after a deaf couple was attacked inside their home.
The Clarion-Ledger reports Angela Maria Nardolillo, a California-based jiu-jitsu instructor who knows American Sign Language, will be teaching a series of self-defense classes in Madison. One of the classes will be strictly for those who are hearing-impaired.
The announcement comes after Olive Branch Police Maj. William Cox says 68-year-old Diann Kelley and 78-year-old Jimmy Kelley were found bound and beaten July 18 in their home. Both are deaf.
The three suspects – 20-year-old Jeffrey Richardson, 19-year-old Charles Gayles and a juvenile – were arrested soon after the attack on charges of home invasion, aggravated assault and attempted murder.
