Ceremony kicks off Flags of Freedom display in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson Exchange Club hosted the annual Flags of Freedom ceremony Tuesday at the Cumberland First Presbyterian Church.

Over 900 flags were flown in front of the church and Serra Chevrolet of Jackson.

Each year, the flags are displayed to honor active military members, veterans, and first responders.

This event makes it possible for the Jackson Exchange Club to raise money for the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

The Carl Perkins Center helps to fund forensic interviews, therapy sessions and more for children.

Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley spoke at the ceremony, reminding all to thank and support our veterans, and when the opportunities arise, to donate time, talents, and prayers to those who served for our country.

First responders were also invited. Last year, the city’s first responders served over 3,900 children who were victims of child abuse.

“This is important because the National Exchange Club as a whole supports Americanism and Veterans, and anything we can do to support that. Ours is a little unique here in Jackson because we also support the Carl Perkins Center,” said Jackson Exchange Club President Melanie Luckey.

The Jackson Exchange Club pledges a certain amount each year, and a part of the donation will go to the Carl Perkins Center, as well as other youth programs.

“We give 12 scholarships a year to youth here in the Jackson-Madison County area, so this is all to support that,” Luckey said.

This year, the organization raised about 27,000 dollars. The flags will be on display until November 18.
