Meeting addresses ways to help those that are unhoused

JACKSON, Tenn. – City leaders of Jackson met Thursday afternoon to find a solution for those that are unhoused in Jackson.

The idea for this meeting came from Martha Robinson, the Chair of Area Relief Ministries, after she saw an increase in the amount of people homeless in the Hub City.

“I just saw that there so many of us who were just in engaged in helping some of the same populations, and so I just felt it was a good idea to pool our resources to work together and present a team effort towards address this issue,” Robinson said.

Robinson said that a portion of homelessness is caused by those who have aged out of the foster care system and those who no longer have support or resources in Jackson.

“Recent statistics indicate that most Americans are one or two paychecks away from homelessness, and so we want to put some preventive measures in place that we can keep people from ending up on the streets at all and those who are out there, we can to take care of them,” Robinson said.

ARM’s end goal is making sure the leaders in attendance were able to help. This will not be the last conversation from ARM.

“We hope to make this an annual event where everyone can come together and come up with a great plan and then work with our legislators and other nonprofits,” Robinson said.

The finance committee mentioned that ARM will be able to apply for nonprofit grants soon.
