City of Jackson shares update on stormwater assesment

JACKSON, Tenn. — Thursday, Jackson city leaders spoke out about the stormwater assessment and the challenges the city faces regarding stormwater infrastructure. There is a 54-inch stormwater pipe located in a commercial district underneath the roadway. The entire bottom section of the pipe has extensive damage due to rust and corrosion, exposing the base and ground beneath the pipe. Over time, these suppressions will form into large sinkholes, creating hazardous situations for the public and infrastructure. “It’s widespread throughout the city, if something were compromising this specific pipe, were to fail, it could affect more than just that pipe or the infrastructure above it, it could affect others,” said Austin Clark, Public Works Director for the City of Jackson. Currently, the city is in the scope of a contract negotiation stage. A $9.3 million American Rescue Plan grant from TDEC has been awarded to the City of Jackson to begin the stormwater assessment project. The deadline for the completion of this work is December 2026.
