Authorities issue warning for iPhone users about new feature

JACKSON, Tenn. — Authorities have a warning for iPhone users.

According to several law enforcement agencies across the state, iPhone users should beware of a feature called NameDrop.

NameDrop allows you to share contact information just by bringing phones or Apple watches close together.

The issue? Authorities say if you have recently updated your iPhone to iOS 17, then the NameDrop feature is on by default, and could allow scammers to get your information.

Authorities are urging iPhone users to turn this feature off, and only turn it on as needed.

HOW TO:

If you want to turn off this feature, officials said you should go to “Settings,” tap “General,” click “AirDrop,” and switch the “Bringing Devices Together” option to off.

MORE DETAILED:

There are three (3) options: Receiving Off, Contacts Only, or Everyone for 10 Minutes.

1. Make sure this is set to either Receiving Off or Contacts Only!

2. Bring Devices Together, both devices have to be within bluetooth range

3. Use Cellular Data allows greater distance between devices.

Safest settings are as follows: Receiving – Off, Bring Devices Together – Off, and Use Cellular Data – Off.

You can always turn these options on as you need them! Just remember to turn them off after use!
